This striking plant is normally used for its decorative qualities, but it is edible. The plant's long leaf blades are used for wrapping zongzi (a sort of Chinese rice tamale.) In Japan, its leaves are used as an herbal tea and also used to flavor noodles and wrap rice cakes. Also used by some for medicinal purposes.
Likes moist soil and sun to shade. Root hardy to Zone 8. Only flowers in relatively frost-free areas.
