Ceratonia siliqua. St John’s Bread. Locust Tree. Handsome evergreen tree to about 30 feet. Some people believe the “locusts” that John the Baptist ate in the wilderness were the pods of this tree. Thus the name, St John’s Bread. The pulp in the seedpods of carob is very nutritious and, due to its high sugar content is sweet. Prefers sand and loamy well-drained soils and excels growing on nutritionally poor sites. It can grow in acid or very alkaline soils. Needs plenty of sunlight. Requires dry or moist soil and can tolerate drought. All new growth is frost sensitive. With a few years of initial protection the range of the tree can be extended.
Starter plants are shipped in 3" deep pots. We try to keep all of our plants between 3-8" in height with excellent root systems.
