Laurus nobilis. The true bay leaf tree used extensively in Mediterranean cooking. Forms a small pyramid-shaped tree or shrub with aromatic, evergreen leaves. Much of the "bay leaf" available in the US comes from the California bay tree Umbellularia californica. There is considerable difference between the substitute and the genuine Laurus nobilis.

Ceratonia siliqua. St John’s Bread. Locust Tree. Handsome evergreen tree to about 30 feet. Some people believe the “locusts” that John the Baptist ate in the wilderness were the pods of this tree.
